Zheng Qinwen Withdraws from Stuttgart

Sports News

Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen has pulled out of the upcoming WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, scheduled to begin next week.

This was intended to be Zheng`s third appearance in Stuttgart, where she achieved her best result last year by reaching the Round of 16. In her most recent tournament, the World No. 8 was defeated by Ekaterina Alexandrova in the quarterfinals of the Credit One Charleston Open. Notably, prior to this, she had won 13 consecutive matches on clay courts.

Ons Jabeur and Barbora Krejcikova are also absent from the Stuttgart tournament due to ongoing leg and back injuries, respectively.

Jabeur`s injury forced her to retire during her third-round match at the Miami Open against Jasmine Paolini. Krejcikova has been sidelined since the WTA Finals in Riyadh last October.

The Stuttgart field is still strong, headlined by World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, a three-time finalist here, and World No. 2 Iga Swiatek, a two-time champion. The top 5 is rounded out by Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Mirra Andreeva. The projected top 8 seeds will also include Jasmine Paolini, Emma Navarro, and Diana Shnaider, who will be working with a new coach, former World No. 1 Dinara Safina, at this tournament.

Rebecca Sramkova from Slovakia will now enter the main draw as a result of Zheng`s withdrawal.
