Wayne Rooney has advised Trent Alexander-Arnold that a transfer to Spain would be a beneficial career move for him.

Rooney also revealed that he himself had contemplated a similar move during his career.

Speaking to BBC Sport, the former captain of England and Manchester United striker stated, “Considering it`s Real Madrid, you cannot question it as a step up in his career.”

“Real Madrid is the biggest football club globally.”

“This would be a significant opportunity, and it would be understandable if he felt it was too appealing to decline.”

“Liverpool is his childhood team, but sometimes players need to make such career decisions.”

“When I informed Manchester United in 2010 about my decision not to renew my contract and submitted a transfer request, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Barcelona all expressed interest in me.”

“I was prepared to play in Spain, and discussions did occur.”

“A potential agreement with Real Madrid seemed more likely for a short period.”

“However, Barcelona was the team that appealed to me most, particularly the prospect of playing alongside Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, Xavi, and Sergio Busquets.”

“Ultimately, I chose to remain at United, but Barcelona possessed an exceptional team, and any player would have been thrilled to be part of it.”

“Real Madrid is currently similar, with players like Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr, making it an attractive destination for Alexander-Arnold.”

“Spain would indeed be a very positive move for him.”

Alexander-Arnold has faced criticism from some fans regarding this potential transfer.

Rooney added, “The fact that he might move on a free transfer has upset some fans, but this situation is a result of decisions from both Liverpool and Alexander-Arnold.”

Reflecting on his own departure from Everton, he said, “My situation was different when I left my boyhood club, Everton, to join United in 2004.”

“I didn`t want to leave at the time—I was heartbroken—but I knew I would have to move on eventually to improve myself and win trophies.”

“This is another aspect that might make Liverpool fans question Alexander-Arnold`s potential departure, as he is already achieving success with them.”

“But again, it comes down to wanting to experience a different culture.”

Rooney’s former teammate, Rio Ferdinand, also commented to Liverpool fans: “This player has been one of your best. You should be applauding him and acknowledging his contributions.”
