Top seed Svitolina triumphs in Rouen; wins first title in nearly two years

Sports News

Top-ranked Elina Svitolina celebrated her first tournament victory in almost two years on Sunday, claiming the championship at the WTA 250 Open Capfinances Rouen Métropole.

Svitolina of Ukraine, seeded No. 1, defeated No. 3 seed Olga Danilovic of Serbia in the Rouen, France final. The closely fought match on indoor clay lasted 1 hour and 58 minutes, with Svitolina winning 6-4, 7-6(8).

In a tense second set conclusion, Svitolina fought off two set points at 4-6 in the tiebreak before seizing her fourth championship point to win the match.

This victory improves Svitolina`s impressive record in WTA singles finals. The former World No. 3 has now competed in 22 tour-level finals throughout her career, winning 18 of them.

Back to winning ways: Svitolina previously won the Strasbourg title in May 2023, shortly after returning from maternity leave. However, she had not won another title until this week.

Since Strasbourg, Svitolina reached only one final – finishing as runner-up in Auckland in January 2024, where she narrowly lost to Coco Gauff in three sets.

But at her debut appearance in the Rouen tournament, Svitolina excelled, securing the title without losing a single set throughout the week. Notably, seven of her 18 titles have been won on clay courts.

More to come…
