Two iconic figures in golf, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, have joined forces to introduce an exciting, new format to the sport. They are the visionaries behind TGL, an innovative golf league enhanced by technology.

In collaboration with the PGA Tour, TGL is set to deliver a unique viewing experience, bringing fans closer to the action as teams of elite golfers compete in a specially designed, high-tech arena.

Here’s a closer look at what TGL is all about:

What is TGL Golf?

Launched in August 2022, TGL is a technology-driven, team-based golf league. It features six teams, each composed of four PGA Tour players, competing in two-hour matches at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. This venue is custom-built for TGL events.

What Does TGL Stand For?

TGL is short for Tomorrow`s Golf League. This name originates from TMRW Sports, a company established by Woods, McIlroy, and former NBC golf executive Mike McCarley. TMRW Sports is dedicated to developing technology-focused ventures within the sports and entertainment industries.

How Do TGL Matches Work?

Each TGL match consists of two sessions. The first session is called “triples,” a nine-hole, 3-on-3 format with alternate shot play. The second session is “singles,” featuring head-to-head competition over six holes, with each golfer playing two holes.

  • The course inside SoFi Center is equipped with advanced technology and spans approximately 97 yards by 50 yards, about the size of a football field.
  • Players tee off from real grass and hit from fairway, rough, and sand surfaces onto a massive simulation screen, which is over 20 times larger than a standard golf simulator.
  • The high-tech green includes mechanisms that adjust the slope, offering varied playing conditions for each TGL hole.
  • Each hole is worth one point. In case of a tie after regulation, an overtime period decides the winner.
  • Overtime: TGL overtime is similar to a penalty shootout in soccer. Golfers compete head-to-head until one team places two shots closer to the pin than their opponents.
  • Shot clock: Matches include a 40-second shot clock. Players must take their shot within this time; otherwise, their team incurs a one-stroke penalty for a shot clock violation.
  • The 40-second limit is based on the USGA`s recommendations for pace of play.
  • Timeouts: Each team gets four timeouts per match, with two timeouts available in each session. Timeouts not used in the first session do not carry over. The team currently playing can call a timeout at any point before the shot clock expires. The opposing team can call a timeout until the other team`s player addresses the ball. Teams cannot call consecutive timeouts on the same shot.
  • Referee: A referee is present on the course to enforce TGL rules, and another official monitors the match from a booth.
  • All golfers wear microphones during matches, providing fans with an immersive experience.

TGL events are designed to complement the PGA Tour schedule as part of their partnership. Weekly matches lead to playoffs, culminating in one team winning the SoFi Cup.

TGL Points System

Similar to the NHL, TGL uses a points system during the regular season. Teams can earn up to two points per match, which determine their standing for the SoFi Cup.

A win in regulation or overtime is worth two points, while an overtime loss earns one point.

The top four teams advance to the playoffs, which feature a single-elimination semifinal and a best-of-three championship series.
