Swiatek clears the air: Wimbledon is still on the calendar

Sports News

After a disappointing 6-1, 6-1 loss to Coco Gauff in the Madrid semifinals last week, Iga Swiatek acknowledged her upset. However, she clarified on Tuesday that the extensive speculation circulating on social media was significantly inaccurate. Swiatek firmly denied that she had seriously considered canceling her grass-court season.

Speaking to reporters at the Internazionali d’Italia, Swiatek commented, “Over the past few days, I’ve encountered countless untrue comments. There are so many baseless theories circulating about me right now, particularly within the Polish media.”

As a four-time Roland Garros champion and the current World No. 2, Swiatek understands the level of public interest her status attracts.

Swiatek acknowledged the media`s role, stating, “You all enjoy creating articles that will attract readers – I understand that. It’s part of the job.”

She definitively stated her commitment to the grass season. “But yes, I am certainly not going to skip Wimbledon. I genuinely want to improve my performance on grass. Each year offers a new chance. I will absolutely play Wimbledon, unless I sustain an injury.”

Swiatek’s career record at Wimbledon (11 wins, 5 losses, a .688 winning percentage) does not match her impressive results at the other three Grand Slams: Roland Garros (35-2, .946), the US Open (20-5, .800), and the Australian Open (22-7, .759). Interestingly, her only junior singles Grand Slam title came at Wimbledon in 2018.
