Svitolina and Top Players Set for Strasbourg

Sports News

The list of main-draw players for the Internationaux de Strasbourg tournament was recently revealed. Among those confirmed are seven players ranked within the WTA`s Top 20, all set to compete for the final WTA 500 clay-court championship of the year.

Elina Svitolina, a two-time winner of the event, is included in this group. She aims to make history by becoming the first player to secure three titles in Strasbourg since Anabel Medina Garrigues achieved the feat in 2008.

Svitolina, from Ukraine, is having a remarkable clay-court season in 2024. She has won all nine of her WTA Tour matches on clay so far this year. Just this week, she reached the semifinals in Madrid, marking her first WTA 1000 semifinal appearance since 2021.

Her victory at the 2023 Strasbourg tournament was her first WTA title following her return from maternity leave earlier that year. She previously won the title in 2020 as well.

Another past champion entering the main draw is Barbora Krejcikova, the reigning Wimbledon champion. She won her first WTA singles title in Strasbourg in 2021, shortly before claiming her first Grand Slam singles title at Roland Garros that same year.

The highest-ranked players confirmed for Strasbourg include World No. 9 Paula Badosa and World No. 10 Emma Navarro. Besides Svitolina and Krejcikova, other Top 20 players expected to compete are Daria Kasatkina, Beatriz Haddad Maia, and Liudmila Samsonova.

Former Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin is also on the entry list, alongside past Grand Slam finalists Danielle Collins and Leylah Fernandez.

Information regarding wild cards for the tournament will be released closer to the start date. The main-draw matches in Strasbourg are scheduled to begin on Sunday, May 18.
