Welbeck secured a Premier League title with Manchester United but was transferred to Arsenal a year after Ferguson retired in 2013.

Leading up to this weekend`s FA Cup quarter-finals, Welbeck mentioned that Ferguson, 83, reached out to him following his goal against Newcastle in the previous round.

Speaking to the BBC, Welbeck said, “Sir Alex Ferguson actually called me after the Newcastle goal.”

“He spoke about the goal and my overall performance.”

“He was thrilled, and to maintain that connection, he`s a manager who always cares about his players, consistently wants the best for them, and still keeps in touch even now.”

Welbeck`s excellent extra-time winning goal against Newcastle has set up Brighton`s quarter-final match against Nottingham Forest this Saturday.

The former England international has had a productive season on the South Coast, scoring seven Premier League goals in just 17 starts.

His goal against Newcastle even prompted former Man Utd teammate Wayne Rooney to make a strong statement.

Manchester United`s all-time top scorer, Rooney, 39, commented, “Danny is great to play alongside.”

“To be completely honest, I would still like to see him here, playing for Manchester United.”

“He has scored goals throughout his career. He faced injuries early on, but he appears to have overcome them and is having a fantastic season.”

Welbeck recently revealed his participation in a WhatsApp group with former Man Utd stars.

He told Sky Sports, “Everyone contributes. There`s a lot of banter, football talk, and just general joking around.”

When asked about the group admin, Welbeck responded, “I think it might be Rio Ferdinand.”

“He just loves to talk, doesn`t he. You know how he is, always chatting. He`s made a career out of talking now, so… we give him a lot of stick too.”
