Solana Sierra and Darja Semenistaja emerged as the champions at this week`s WTA 125 tournaments held on clay courts.
In Antalya, Turkey, a series of three WTA 125 events concluded with Argentina`s Solana Sierra defeating Spain`s Leyre Romero Gormaz with a score of 6-3, 6-4. This victory earned Sierra the Megasaray Hotels Open #3 title.
Previously, Anca Todoni and Olga Danilovic had won the first two Megasaray Hotels Opens of the year. Now, Sierra, seeded No. 8, joins them as an Antalya champion.
Sierra, aged 20, demonstrated improvement throughout the week. After navigating through three-set matches in her initial two rounds, she dominated the semifinals, conceding only one game. In the final against Romero Gormaz, she secured victory in 97 minutes, claiming her first WTA 125 title.
Having been a runner-up in the 2022 Junior Roland Garros singles, this significant professional title will propel Sierra`s ranking from No. 152 to a career-high of No. 119 in the upcoming rankings.
The Antalya #3 doubles title was claimed on Saturday by Anna Bondar and Simona Waltert, who overcame Alicia Barnett and Elixane Lechemia in a close final with a score of 7-5, 2-6, [10-6]. Notably, Waltert also won the Antalya #2 doubles title the previous week partnering with Maria Lourdes Carle.
Meanwhile, at the Open Internacional Femeni Solgirones in La Bisbal d`Emporda, Spain, Darja Semenistaja of Latvia defeated Dalma Galfi of Hungary with a score of 5-7, 6-0, 6-4. This win secured her the WTA 125 singles title.
Semenistaja spent just over two hours overcoming Galfi to clinch her second WTA 125 title, and her first on clay. Her previous WTA 125 title was on hard courts in Mumbai, India, last year.
Unlike Sierra`s relatively straightforward path in Antalya, Semenistaja had to battle through three sets in her last three matches this week. These resilient performances will boost her ranking from No. 165 to No. 131 on Monday.
Semenistaja also reached the doubles final in La Bisbal but was defeated on Saturday. The top-seeded pair, Magali Kempen and Anna Siskova, defeated Semenistaja and Nina Stojanovic with a score of 7-6(1), 6-1 to win the doubles title.
Siskova`s victory marked a successful title defense in La Bisbal doubles, having won the event last year with Miriam Kolodziejova.
