Serena Williams has been recognized by TIME magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world for 2025. This marks her third appearance on the prestigious annual list, which highlights individuals globally who are shaping and advancing the world.
Allyson Felix, an Olympic track champion, penned the tribute for Williams` inclusion in the `Titans` category. Other notable figures in this category include gymnast Simone Biles, actress Blake Lively, and Lorne Michaels, the creator of Saturday Night Live. Felix acknowledged Williams` resilience in overcoming pregnancy complications and her return to professional sports after childbirth.
Felix emphasized that Williams, previously honored in 2010 and 2014 for her tennis achievements, exemplifies that athletes` identities extend beyond their sport. She praised Williams for her continued efforts to break down barriers.
Felix further highlighted Williams` diverse endeavors, such as her venture capital firm investing in female and minority-founded companies, her co-ownership of the Toronto Tempo WNBA expansion team, and her Super Bowl halftime performance. These activities, according to Felix, demonstrate the multifaceted nature of athletes.
“She doesn’t have to do any of this. She could take a break from being in the public eye and raise her family. Instead, she continues to pave the way. So many female athletes see ourselves in Serena. A win for her is a win for all of us,” Felix stated.
Williams` selection was accompanied by an extensive profile written by Sean Gregory, where she openly discussed her business ventures, including Serena Ventures; influential female athletes like Caitlin Clark; and her contentment with her transition away from professional tennis, even while feeling physically capable of competing at 43.
“I`ve dedicated my entire life to tennis, and I would happily give another two years if I had time. But it`s nice to do something different,” Williams commented.
Coco Gauff expressed her admiration for Williams` recognition after reaching the quarterfinals at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. She described Williams as deserving of being named among the most influential people of all time, noting her impact on millions, including herself, particularly in inspiring strong women and women of color.
“It`s well-deserved. I wasn`t surprised when I saw that. Her photos looked really good,” Gauff added.
