Despite helping the Ottawa Senators reach the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time since 2018, defenseman Nick Jensen is dealing with lingering effects from an injury.
Speaking to reporters on Friday at the team`s annual charity golf event, General Manager Steve Staios confirmed recent reports that the blueliner had undergone hip surgery.
Jensen played in 71 regular-season games last season for the Senators, recording 21 points (three goals, 18 assists) and finishing with a plus-18 rating.
Staios did not provide specific details about the injury or the procedure but stated that there is currently no established timeline for his recovery and return.
According to a report by Bruce Garrioch in the Ottawa Citizen, Jensen thoroughly reviewed his options and ultimately determined that surgery was the most effective course of action.
The 34-year-old was a consistent presence on Ottawa`s roster throughout the 2024-25 campaign. He ranked eighth on the team in both total ice time and average ice time (20:13), and was fifth in blocked shots with 95.
Even though he appeared to be hampered by the injury during the postseason, Jensen still played in all six games of the Senators` first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. In that series, he finished fifth in average ice time (20:56) and eighth in blocked shots (4), although he did not record any points.
“Nick is truly a warrior,” Staios commented last month during the team`s season-ending media availability. “To have been able to perform at that level while managing the injury he had demonstrates his character.”
