Sao Paulo Set for Return to Hologic WTA Tour After Quarter-Century

Sports News

The WTA announced on Wednesday that Sao Paulo is set to host a Hologic WTA Tour event in September, marking its first appearance on the tour calendar in 25 years. This new tournament, the WTA 250 SP Open, is scheduled for the week of September 8th. It will be played on outdoor hard courts and feature a 32-player singles main draw and a 16-team doubles draw. The SP Open will take the place of the Jasmin Open previously held in Monastir.

The last time a WTA tournament was held in Sao Paulo was in 2000, when the city hosted the Brasil Open. The champions from that event were Rita Kuti-Kis of Hungary in singles and the Argentine pairing of Laura Montalvo and Paola Suarez in doubles.

The news of Sao Paulo`s return follows an already dynamic start to the 2025 season. So far, 15 different players have claimed singles titles across WTA 250, 500, and 1000 level events. This includes Mirra Andreeva`s notable achievement of becoming the youngest champion ever at a WTA 1000 tournament.

This engaging start to the season, coupled with the introduction of the WTA`s new brand identity, has contributed to significant social media growth. By the end of March, WTA followers saw a 25% increase year-on-year, and total video views rose by 163% in the first quarter.
