Rogers Communications Inc. announced on Wednesday that it has successfully completed its purchase of BCE`s 37.5% ownership stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE). This transaction significantly increases Rogers` total stake in the organization.
Following the finalized acquisition, Rogers now holds a 75% ownership interest in MLSE, positioning the company as the majority stakeholder of the prominent sports and entertainment entity.
“MLSE is one of the most prestigious sports and entertainment organizations in the world and we’re proud to be the majority owner of these iconic sports teams,” stated Tony Staffieri, President and CEO of Rogers. “Live sports are a core part of our business and core to the fans who live and breathe every moment.”
Rogers has demonstrated a strong commitment to Canadian sports, having invested over $15 billion in the sector throughout the past decade.
Edward Rogers, Executive Chair at Rogers, reinforced this commitment, saying, “We’re passionate about winning and we’re committed to bringing more championships to fans in Canada.”
MLSE`s extensive portfolio includes several of Canada`s most recognizable sports franchises, such as the Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL), Toronto Raptors (NBA), Toronto Argonauts (CFL), and Toronto FC (MLS), alongside other properties.
This acquisition further strengthens Rogers` existing presence in the sports landscape, which already encompasses ownership of the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team, the Rogers Centre stadium, and the Sportsnet media brand.
Adding to its significant sports investments, Rogers also recently finalized a 12-year extension for the exclusive Canadian media rights to the National Hockey League (NHL).
The completion of the deal was effective as of Tuesday, following the successful obtainment of all necessary regulatory and league approvals.
