Premier League: Supercomputer Forecasts Champions League Qualification Race

Football

A supercomputer has calculated the probabilities for teams aiming to qualify for next season`s Champions League.

Liverpool and Arsenal have already secured their spots in the prestigious European competition, leaving three remaining places up for grabs.

`Newcastle
Newcastle appears likely to qualify for the Champions League.
`Manchester
Manchester City are given a 95 per cent chance of making it.
`Chelsea
Nottingham Forest and Chelsea are set to compete for fifth place.

Strong performances by English clubs in European competitions this season have resulted in the Premier League gaining an additional Champions League spot, meaning the top five teams will qualify instead of the usual four.

With only a few weeks remaining in the current season, a Sky Sports supercomputer has analyzed each club`s chances of securing a qualification place.

Newcastle currently holds a strong position with 62 points and is given an 84 per cent chance of finishing in the top five.

The team is in impressive form, having won seven of their last eight matches across all competitions.

However, they face a challenging schedule for their remaining games, with fixtures against tough opponents including Brighton, Chelsea, Arsenal, and Everton.

For this reason, Manchester City is rated as more likely to qualify, with the supercomputer predicting a 95 per cent chance for Pep Guardiola`s side.

City are just one point behind Newcastle and are favoured to win their upcoming matches against Wolves, Southampton, Bournemouth, and Fulham.

Chelsea and Nottingham Forest appear to be the primary competitors for the fifth position, particularly after Forest`s recent unexpected defeat to Brentford.

Aston Villa also remains in contention, though their probability is considerably lower at just 13 per cent.

Chelsea and Forest are currently level on 60 points, suggesting the race could potentially be decided on the final matchday when Forest is scheduled to play at Stamford Bridge.

Despite Chelsea`s superior goal difference, the supercomputer slightly favours Forest with a 59 per cent chance compared to Chelsea`s 49 per cent.

The team that finishes sixth will secure a spot in the Europa League.

It is not yet clear whether the seventh position will lead to a Europa League or Conference League spot, as Crystal Palace has reached the FA Cup final.

If Crystal Palace wins the FA Cup final against City at Wembley, they will take one of the Europa League places typically allocated based on Premier League standings.

`Nottingham
Nottingham Forest risks falling out of the top five spots.

Additionally, there is a possibility of six English clubs participating in the Champions League next season if one of the Europa League finalists, Tottenham or Manchester United (both of whom secured first-leg leads in their semi-finals), goes on to win the tournament, as winning the Europa League guarantees a Champions League berth.
