Slovakian professional tennis player Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who reached the semifinals at the Olympics, has announced that she is pregnant.
The former World No. 26 and winner of three Hologic WTA Tour titles has not competed since her loss to Varvara Gracheva during the Doha qualifying rounds in February.
“Hello,” the Slovakian athlete shared on Instagram last week. “I just wanted to let you know that the reason I haven`t been playing tournaments or been part of the BJKC team in April is because of my pregnancy. It`s a personal matter for me, but I wanted to share this to avoid any confusion in the coming months. My partner and I are very happy and excited.”
Schmiedlova`s partner is fellow Slovakian and ATP tour player Lukas Klein, who is currently ranked No. 173.
Schmiedlova, aged 30, has won titles in Katowice (2015), Bucharest (2015), and Bogota (2018). She also reached the round of 16 at Roland Garros in 2023. However, her most impressive performances have come while representing Slovakia, especially at the Olympic Games. She secured all three of her career Top 10 victories on the Olympic stage, including notable upsets over Jasmine Paolini and Barbora Krejcikova to reach the semifinals in Paris last summer. She was also a significant member of her country`s Billie Jean King Cup team over the years and helped Slovakia reach the final of the competition last year.
