Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi required emergency surgery for an abdominal injury sustained during a collision with a goalpost in the match against Leicester.
The striker received medical attention for several minutes after the impact late in Sunday`s 2-2 Premier League draw but managed to continue playing.

However, it was only on Monday that the medical team fully understood the severity of his injury.
The 27-year-old Nigerian player was subsequently taken to the hospital for surgery.
The end of the derby match was notable for Nottingham Forest`s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, confronting manager Nuno Espirito Santo on the field.
It was later disclosed that Awoniyi`s injury situation was the primary reason for this intense discussion.
Marinakis stated he was upset by the decision allowing the forward to return to play after the initial injury.
Despite receiving medical treatment, Awoniyi was able to resume and even finish the match.
However, he appeared visibly uncomfortable after stretching for Anthony Elanga`s cross and subsequently colliding with the goalpost.
Following the draw, Nuno attributed Awoniyi being permitted to continue playing to a “misunderstanding”.

He commented, “It was disappointing for everyone.”
“Unfortunately, we had to play the final 10 minutes effectively with one player less. Taiwo attempted to continue but was in too much pain to significantly contribute to the team.”
“There was a communication breakdown between the coaching staff and the medical team. We were prepared to make a substitution, then Taiwo tried to play on but was unable to move properly.”
Nuno added, “Of course, we feel disappointment and frustration. However, it is the owner`s passion that helps us grow as a club.”
“He motivates us. He wants us to improve… 30,000 fans felt the same way. I`m sure many of them would have come onto the pitch to show their frustration. We are very grateful to the Marinakis family.”
Marinakis downplayed the on-field confrontation, emphasizing the club`s focus on qualifying for European competition.
However, he did state, “Everyone – the coaching staff, players, supporters, and myself included – felt frustrated regarding Taiwo`s injury and the medical staff`s assessment of his ability to continue playing.”
“This reaction is understandable. It demonstrates the passion we all share for our club. Let`s remain grateful, passionate, and continue to strive for success!”
