Newcastle United is reportedly planning a move to sign Jack Grealish from Manchester City, specifically on a loan deal. The 29-year-old winger is believed to be nearing an exit from the Etihad Stadium.
Grealish, a £100 million signing, was notably excluded from City`s FIFA Club World Cup squad.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is prepared to formalize their interest if Manchester City seeks to offload Grealish and his substantial £300,000-a-week salary elsewhere for the upcoming season. This potential move could become a higher priority for Newcastle should forward Anthony Gordon receive summer transfer offers.
While other clubs might also pursue Grealish, his significant wages and a potential transfer fee make a permanent deal unlikely for most. Even a temporary loan presents financial hurdles. Manchester City might need to subsidize the deal by covering a portion of his salary for the loan period.
The Citizens are reportedly willing to incur a significant loss, potentially £60 million, on their initial record investment in Grealish.
Grealish, who had a disappointing 2024-25 Premier League season with only one goal and one assist, has reportedly been informed that he is no longer a central figure in Pep Guardiola`s plans.
The player himself appeared to express his frustration on social media regarding Guardiola`s decisions.
Responding to comments by former teammate Gabriel Agbonlahor about Guardiola choosing to give Claudio Echeverri his debut in the FA Cup final instead of playing Grealish, Agbonlahor suggested Guardiola`s actions felt “personal” and aimed at pushing Grealish towards an exit. Agbonlahor described Guardiola as ruthless in moving players on if they aren`t in his long-term vision.
Grealish`s reply to this suggestion was cryptic, asking “What u want me to do score a hatty in 20?”, appearing to reference limited playing time or substitute appearances.
The article mentions Kevin De Bruyne also faced a similar situation under Guardiola, implying that players like Kyle Walker and John Stones might eventually follow suit.
Manchester City is finalizing other transfers, with AC Milan`s Tijjani Reijnders expected to join for £46.2m, Rayan Cherki from Lyon for £30m, and Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves for £34m, who should join the team for pre-season.
