The New York Islanders have formalized their relationship with one of their top prospects, announcing the signing of forward Victor Eklund to a three-year, entry-level contract. This agreement represents the official step for the young player drafted by the club just weeks ago.
Eklund, an 18-year-old native of Stockholm, Sweden, was selected by the Islanders in the first round, 16th overall, at the 2025 NHL Entry Draft held this past June. His signing marks the typical progression for a high-round draft pick transitioning into the professional system.
During the 2024-25 season, Eklund skated with Djurgardens in HockeyAllsvenskan, Sweden`s second-highest professional league. He posted solid offensive numbers, recording 31 points through 19 goals and 12 assists over 42 games against professional competition. This performance underscores his potential as an offensive contributor.
On the international stage, Eklund has represented Sweden multiple times, participating in the past two World Junior Championships. His experience includes earning a bronze medal with the Swedish squad in the 2024 tournament, showcasing his ability to perform in high-pressure environments against peers from around the globe.
The draft pick used to select Eklund, the 16th overall selection, has its own interesting backstory for Islanders fans. It was acquired by the club, along with the 17th overall pick, from the Montreal Canadiens in a trade that saw defenseman Noah Dobson move to Montreal. Securing Eklund with this pick, and now signing him, indicates the value the Islanders placed on that transaction`s return.
Signing his entry-level contract is the standard and necessary next step for Eklund. While it doesn`t guarantee an immediate spot in the NHL, it solidifies his place within the Islanders organization and allows the club to manage his development path as he aims to eventually join the ranks of the National Hockey League.
