Mutua Madrid Open Round of 16 Updates

Sports News

Monday`s Round of 16 play at the Mutua Madrid Open was significantly disrupted by a widespread power outage affecting parts of Spain, Portugal, and southern France. This unexpected event forced the suspension of six matches. Only two matches were successfully completed: Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic in straight sets, and Mirra Andreeva advanced past Yuliia Starodubtseva. The remaining suspended matches are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, and we will provide updates on the results as they come in.

Completed Matches:

No. 4 Coco Gauff def. Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-2

Gauff has now reached the quarterfinals at every current WTA 1000 event except the Miami tournament.

No. 7 Mirra Andreeva def. Yuliia Starodubtseva

With Monday`s victory, the Madrid Open is now the first tournament where Andreeva has achieved 10 career wins at a single WTA event.

No. 2 Iga Swiatek def. No. 13 Diana Shnaider 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-4

Swiatek has now reached 17 consecutive clay-court quarterfinals, a streak that began after her third-round loss in Madrid four years ago.

No. 5 Madison Keys def. No. 19 Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3

Keys is now the second American player, after Serena Williams (44), to record 25 or more WTA 1000 match wins on clay.

No. 17 Elina Svitolina def. Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-4

Prior to this season, Svitolina had not won consecutive matches at the Madrid Open in her previous nine appearances; this win marks her first quarterfinal here.

Moyuka Uchijima def. No. 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 7-6 (5)

Uchijima has reached more WTA quarterfinal appearances in the last two weeks (Rouen and Madrid) than in her entire career before this recent run (Monastir in 2022).

Matches to Resume/Scheduled:

No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka vs. Peyton Stearns (8 p.m.)

Head-to-head: Sabalenka leads 1-0, a tight 6-7(2), 6-2, 7-6(6) victory in last year’s second round at Indian Wells.

No. 24 Marta Kostyuk vs. Anastasia Potapova (9:30 p.m.)

Head-to-head: Potapova leads 2-1; they have not previously played on clay.
