German football legend Mats Hummels has officially announced his retirement from professional football.

The 36-year-old Hummels concluded his remarkable 18-year career with a heartfelt announcement on social media.

The central defender, who last played for Roma, shared a video showcasing career highlights from his time with Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and the German national team.

He then confirmed his decision to retire from professional football at the end of the current season.

Hummels expressed his emotions, stating: "I'm currently overwhelmed with emotion. The moment has come that every footballer eventually faces."

"After an incredible 18 years and everything football has given me, I am bringing my career to a close this summer."

"Looking back at these highlights, I realize the immense significance of this journey and how extraordinary it has been to experience all of it."

Throughout his illustrious career, Hummels achieved almost every major honor available in football.

The former Germany international secured two Bundesliga titles and two German Cups with Borussia Dortmund, also reaching two Champions League finals with the club.

Additionally, Hummels won three league titles and one cup with Bayern Munich, where his professional journey began in 2007.

His crowning achievement was in 2014 when he lifted the World Cup with Germany, contributing to their 1-0 victory over Argentina in the final. He represented Germany 78 times.

Reflecting on his successful career, Hummels acknowledged the crucial roles of his coaches, teammates, and supporters.

Hummels added: "Success requires numerous factors: the right coaches at the opportune moments, peak fitness at critical times, and supportive teammates."

"I am deeply grateful to the many individuals, coaches and teammates, who have significantly shaped my career. Without them, I would not have reached this level of success."

"The games themselves were incredible, especially the moments afterwards."

"Celebrating victories in the dressing room or on the field, and sharing those moments with the fans, particularly in front of the Sudtribune [Yellow Wall], are memories that will last forever."

Hummels became emotional as he reflected on his career highlights.

He shared: "It’s already making me emotional now, and I anticipate even stronger emotions when it’s definitively over."
