Matheus Cunha has publicly stated his desire to leave Wolverhampton Wanderers to advance his career and compete for significant trophies. The 25-year-old Brazilian striker was a target for Arsenal during the January transfer window.
While other clubs like Chelsea, Tottenham, and Nottingham Forest also showed interest, and Manchester United are also keen, Cunha remained at Wolves and signed a new contract. This new deal, extending until 2029, is believed to include a £62.5 million release clause.
Despite signing the extension, Cunha has now confirmed reports from January indicating his intention to move away from the club when the summer transfer window opens. His 13 Premier League goals this season are likely to secure Wolves` place in the division.
Speaking to the Guardian, Cunha explained that he had received numerous offers but felt it was wrong to leave mid-season while the club was in a difficult position. Now that Wolves are nearing their goal of avoiding relegation, he feels ready to pursue ambitions at a higher level.
“I had many offers, but I wouldn’t have felt right leaving the club mid-season in a tough situation, in the relegation zone,” Cunha said. “Now, we’re close to achieving our goal [of staying up]. But I’ve made it clear that I need to take the next step. I want to compete for titles, for major honors. I know I have the potential.”
Cunha joined Wolves in 2023 from Atletico Madrid, initially on loan before a permanent £44 million move. He is seeking his first major club trophy, despite winning the Toulon Tournament in 2019 and an Olympic gold medal in 2021 with Brazil. Interestingly, Cunha is also fluent in six languages: Portuguese, English, Italian, French, German, and Spanish.
Reflecting on his time at Wolves, Cunha expressed gratitude, stating, “Wolves gave me joy back. The fans have given me a lot. The status I have today, the player I am now, and the happiness I’m feeling, it’s because of them. I’m really grateful to Wolves.” He also touched upon the demanding nature of professional football, noting the sacrifices it entails and his desire for a more normal life after his playing career.
