Manchester United`s leadership has set an ambitious target for the upcoming season following what is currently their worst Premier League campaign on record.
The team is enduring significant struggles, sitting 16th in the table with just two games left.
A recent 2-0 home loss equalled a club record of nine home defeats in a single Premier League season.
Manager Ruben Amorim is also nearing an unwanted record, facing the prospect of becoming the first United boss to go eight Premier League games winless if they don`t secure three points against Chelsea.
United`s final league position is already guaranteed to be their lowest since their top-flight relegation in 1974.
Despite the deep-seated issues, club officials have outlined a bold objective for the next campaign: to finish inside the top six.
This target is considered “acceptable” by the club`s key decision-makers, irrespective of potential Champions League qualification (e.g., via winning the Europa League).
The stated goal comes amid manager Ruben Amorim`s own reflections on the club`s state, having hinted at potentially stepping down if improvements aren`t made.
Amorim spoke candidly about the need for change and bravery in the summer, stating, “We need to change that and we need to be really strong in the summer and to be brave. Because we cannot have a season like this next year. If the feeling is still here, we should give the space to different persons.”
He identified critical issues such as a lack of “energy” and “urgency,” as well as a concerning absence of the feeling that losing at home is a major setback – describing it as “the most dangerous thing that a big club can have.” Amorim took responsibility, emphasizing, “It`s not the players` fault. It`s my fault, I`m responsible.” He concluded that if these fundamental problems aren`t addressed rapidly, he should make way for someone else.
