Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana has had his £350,000 Lamborghini Urus impounded by police for not having insurance.
The 29-year-old, whose season has been marked by several errors, must now quickly arrange insurance or risk the luxury car being crushed.
The vehicle was pulled over by police in Hale Barns, Greater Manchester, on Wednesday morning while one of Onana`s friends was driving. It was flagged as uninsured by an ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) camera before being put onto a transporter and taken to a police pound.
The Cameroon international has 14 days to prove ownership and insurance cover for the Lamborghini. If he fails to do so, the car could be auctioned or destroyed.
A source commented on the incident, stating: “Onana has made a few errors this season and insuring his car properly seems to be the latest one.”
Onana signed for United from Inter Milan in 2023 for £50 million. He has made nearly 100 appearances for the club and won the FA Cup in his first season. However, he has also faced scrutiny for several on-field mistakes.
This incident follows a separate event in March where his wife, Melanie, 35, was robbed of a £62,000 Hermes handbag and a Rolex watch after leaving an upscale Italian restaurant in Cheshire. A man is scheduled to stand trial for the robbery later this year.
Onana is not the first Manchester United player to have a car impounded. In 2021, then-midfielder Paul Pogba`s £300,000 Rolls-Royce Wraith was seized because it had Monaco-registered plates. Pogba received a fine, points on his licence, and was ordered to pay costs, reportedly accumulating thousands more in storage fees after leaving the vehicle at the pound for months.
Under current rules, a car can be seized if a police officer has reason to believe the driver is uninsured or is not driving according to the conditions of their licence.
