Madrid Open Round of 16 results: Matchups, key outcomes and who advanced

Sports News

Monday`s play at the Mutua Madrid Open, initially anticipated as a full day of exciting matches, was significantly interrupted. A widespread power outage affecting parts of Spain, Portugal, and southern France caused the suspension of six Round of 16 encounters. Only two matches were completed before the outage: Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic, and Mirra Andreeva overcame Yuliia Starodubtseva.

The six suspended matches were successfully completed on Tuesday. This allowed top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, among others, to advance to the quarterfinals, bringing the delayed Round of 16 to a close with a full schedule of action.

No. 4 Coco Gauff def. Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-2

With this victory, Gauff has now reached the quarterfinals at every current WTA 1000 event, except for her home tournament in Miami.

No. 7 Mirra Andreeva def. Yuliia Starodubtseva

Following her win on Monday, the Madrid Open became the first tournament where Mirra Andreeva has accumulated 10 career victories at a single WTA event.

No. 2 Iga Swiatek def. No. 13 Diana Shnaider 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-4

Swiatek has now reached 17 consecutive quarterfinals on clay courts. This impressive streak began after her third-round loss to Ashleigh Barty in Madrid four years ago.

No. 5 Madison Keys def. No. 19 Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3

Madison Keys became only the second American player, after Serena Williams (44 wins), to achieve 25 or more match wins at WTA 1000 events on clay.

No. 17 Elina Svitolina def. Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-4

Prior to this season, Elina Svitolina had never managed to win consecutive matches at the Madrid Open in her previous nine appearances.

Moyuka Uchijima def. No. 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 7-6 (5)

In the past two weeks (at Rouen and Madrid), Uchijima has reached more WTA quarterfinal appearances than in her entire career before this recent run, which included a quarterfinal in Monastir in 2022.

No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka def. Peyton Stearns 6-2, 6-4

Aryna Sabalenka`s victory on Tuesday marked her 28th win of the season, giving her the lead on the tour for total match victories, one ahead of Jessica Pegula.

No. 24 Marta Kostyuk def Anastasia Potapova 6-3, 6-2

Marta Kostyuk has already secured 11 wins at WTA 1000 events in 2025, representing her highest total in a single season at this premier level.
