Madrid Open Round of 16: Matchups, key outcomes and who advanced

Sports News

Monday was set to be a highly anticipated day at the Mutua Madrid Open, but the schedule was abruptly halted by a widespread power outage across parts of Spain, Portugal, and southern France. This disruption forced the suspension of six of the eight Round of 16 matches. Only two matches were successfully completed before the outage occurred: Coco Gauff defeated Belinda Bencic, and Mirra Andreeva secured a win against Yuliia Starodubtseva.

The six postponed matches were subsequently played and finished on Tuesday. Both top seeds, Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek, advanced to the quarter-finals. Tuesday delivered a full day of tennis action, ensuring the Round of 16 was completed despite the unexpected delay.

Here are the key outcomes and players who advanced:

No. 4 Coco Gauff def. Belinda Bencic 6-4, 6-2

With this victory, Gauff has now reached the quarterfinals at every current WTA 1000 event, with the exception of her home tournament in Miami.

No. 7 Mirra Andreeva def. Yuliia Starodubtseva

Following her win on Monday, the Madrid Open became the first tournament where Andreeva has achieved 10 career victories at a single WTA event.

No. 2 Iga Swiatek def. No. 13 Diana Shnaider 6-0, 6-7 (3), 6-4

Swiatek`s win extended her streak to 17 consecutive clay-court quarterfinals, a remarkable run dating back to her third-round loss to Ashleigh Barty in Madrid four years prior.

No. 5 Madison Keys def. No. 19 Donna Vekic 6-2, 6-3

Keys became just the second American player to secure 25 or more WTA-1000 match wins on clay, joining Serena Williams (44) in this achievement.

No. 17 Elina Svitolina def. Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-4

Remarkably, prior to this season, Svitolina had never won consecutive matches at the Madrid Open in her nine previous appearances.

Moyuka Uchijima def. No. 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-4, 7-6 (5)

Uchijima has now reached more WTA quarterfinal appearances in the past two weeks (Rouen and Madrid) than in her entire career before this recent strong performance (Monastir in 2022).

No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka def. Peyton Stearns 6-2, 6-4

Sabalenka`s win on Tuesday was her 28th of the season, placing her in the lead on the tour for most match wins, one ahead of Jessica Pegula.

No. 24 Marta Kostyuk def Anastasia Potapova 6-3, 6-2

Kostyuk has already accumulated 11 WTA 1000 wins in 2025, marking her highest total for a single season at this level of competition.
