The captain of the Dallas Stars is set to stay with the team. Jamie Benn has finalized a one-year contract extension, the club announced on Thursday.

The new deal has a base salary of $1 million and could potentially reach up to $4 million through performance bonuses.

Stars General Manager Jim Nill commented on the significance of Benn`s continued presence. “Jamie embodies everything it means to be a Dallas Star, and has since he was drafted 18 years ago,” Nill stated. “There was never a doubt that Jamie would return next season, and we are thrilled for both our organization and our fans that he will continue to lead our team in our pursuit of winning a championship.”

Benn, 35 years old, has played his entire professional career for Dallas since being selected in the fifth round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Over his 16 seasons, the veteran forward is nearing a major milestone, just 44 points shy of 1,000 career regular-season points.

In 1,192 regular-season appearances, the six-foot-three, 206-pound forward has tallied 399 goals and 557 assists, accumulating 956 points. He has also been a vital player in the playoffs, contributing 80 points (28 goals, 52 assists) in 120 postseason games.

Among active National Hockey League players, Benn is tied for 13th overall in points and tied for 11th in goals.
