For Nikolaj Ehlers, the decision came down to desiring a fresh start.

Having played his whole career up to this point for the Winnipeg Jets, the skilled forward inked a six-year, $51-million deal with the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday.

In his initial comments after signing the contract, Ehlers expressed only affection for his previous team and city.

“As I communicated to them, they were not at fault for anything,” he told the media via Zoom on Saturday. “I spent a decade there, and I cherished my time. I have great affection for the organization, the individuals involved, and my teammates. It truly felt like family.”
