Galfi Claims Oeiras WTA 125 Title

Sports News

Dalma Galfi of Hungary has won her first WTA 125 title after two previous final losses. In the Oeiras Ladies Open final in Portugal, the unseeded Galfi defeated second-seeded American Katie Volynets with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Despite schedule disruptions due to rain throughout the week, the clay-court tournament concluded as planned on Sunday. Galfi`s victory in the final was achieved in a comeback lasting 2 hours and 13 minutes.

Galfi celebrated her significant professional achievement on Instagram, noting it was “Third time’s the charm.”

Previously, Galfi reached two WTA 125 finals, losing to Sara Errani at Contrexeville in 2022 and to Darja Semenistaja at La Bisbal d`Emporda earlier in the same month as her Oeiras win. All three of her WTA 125 finals were played on clay and went to three sets.

In the Oeiras final, Galfi recovered from losing the first set and dominated the following two. She successfully defended against all four break points faced in the second and third sets combined.

Throughout the tournament, Galfi only dropped a single set, which was the first set of the final match. She has won 9 of her last 10 matches, with the Oeiras title coming two weeks after her final appearance at La Bisbal d`Emporda.

Galfi`s current ranking is No. 149, but she is expected to climb closer to the Top 120 in the upcoming rankings. A former Junior World Champion and Junior US Open champion in 2015, Galfi achieved her highest WTA ranking of No. 79 in 2022.

In other news from Sunday in Oeiras, Portuguese sisters Francisca and Matilde Jorge successfully defended their Oeiras Ladies Open doubles title in front of their home crowd.

The Jorge sisters claimed their most significant career title at this same event last year. As the No. 2 seeds this year, they repeated their success, defeating Anastasia Detiuc and Patricia Maria Tig, who were unseeded, 6-1, 6-2 in a final that lasted 63 minutes.
