The Philadelphia Flyers have announced the departure of head coach John Tortorella. Brad Shaw has been appointed as interim head coach. This decision follows a series of poor performances by the team, including a 7-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, which marked their sixth consecutive defeat.
General Manager Daniel Briere stated that this was a difficult decision but a necessary step for the team`s future development. He acknowledged Tortorella`s contribution to the team`s rebuild, his passion, and community work. Briere thanked Tortorella for his hard work and dedication to the Flyers.
John Tortorella, 66, was appointed as the Flyers coach in June 2022 and during his tenure in Philadelphia, his record was 97 wins, 107 losses, and 33 ties. Tortorella is ninth on the NHL`s all-time coaching wins list, has won multiple Jack Adams Awards, and a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004.
Brad Shaw, 60, joined the Flyers coaching staff with Tortorella in July 2022. Prior to that, he spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the Vancouver Canucks. He will now temporarily lead the team.
