According to Werdum, the prospect of fighting Frank Mir was the primary driver for his return to competition. However, when Mir withdrew from the bout, Werdum`s motivation waned significantly. He mentioned that he had been diligently preparing for the Mir fight, experiencing a positive training environment with renowned coaches Rafael Cordeira, Wanderlei Silva, Andre Dida, Bruno Ferreira, and Bruno Silva. Despite this valuable training experience, Werdum stated that his diminished motivation, stemming from the cancellation of the Mir fight, led to his decision to forgo the GFL tournament.
