With just 10 games remaining before the playoffs, the Edmonton Oilers are proving difficult to decipher, much like a complex puzzle.
Concerns linger about their lack of physical presence, insufficient scoring support, inconsistent goaltending, and a defense that frequently concedes multiple goals each game.
However, there are understandable reasons for their struggles.
Key players such as Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid, and Stuart Skinner were absent. Additionally, Mattias Ekholm, usually a top defender, has been hampered by an injury, impacting his performance throughout the season.
Significant trade acquisition Trent Frederic has yet to play with the team. His debut remains uncertain, and if General Manager Stan Bowman cannot secure Frederic`s contract in the off-season, the trade could become a major blunder, similar to letting Dylan Holloway go last summer.
On Thursday, the Seattle Kraken easily defeated Edmonton, dominating in a 6-1 victory that was not enjoyable for Oilers fans.
The Kraken established a commanding lead with five goals in the second period alone, sealing the game.
Zach Hyman commented, “We simply stopped putting in the effort, made too many errors, and they capitalized. Without hard work, especially missing key players, we don`t stand a chance. We let our level of play drop, and they took full advantage.”
The Kraken managed to score six goals past Calvin Pickard in the second period, with one goal overturned due to offside. This period marked the Oilers` poorest performance of the season, while Olivier Rodrigue, recalled from Bakersfield, made his NHL debut, playing the final period.
