World No. 12 tennis star Daria Kasatkina will now represent Australia after obtaining permanent residency.
Kasatkina, 27, announced her decision on Instagram Friday, stating her intention to reside in Melbourne and compete under the Australian flag.
“Australia is a place I love, incredibly welcoming, and where I feel completely at home,” Kasatkina stated. “I am proud to announce I will represent my new homeland, Australia, in my professional tennis career from now on.”
Previously, she competed under a neutral flag since 2022, due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes` national representation following the Ukraine conflict.
Kasatkina`s achievements include reaching the French Open semifinals in 2022, winning eight WTA singles titles, and achieving a career-high ranking of No. 8.
Tennis Australia confirmed Kasatkina`s residency approval on Saturday.
Tennis Australia welcomed her: `Welcome to the Aussie tennis family,` and the Australian Open Instagram account added: `Dasha Down Under. A warm welcome.`
This season, Kasatkina holds a 9-8 record, with her best performance at the Australian Open, reaching the Round of 16.
