Dalma Galfi of Hungary has finally captured a WTA 125 title after two previous occasions as runner-up. The unseeded player defeated second-seeded Katie Volynets from the United States with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, claiming the Oeiras Ladies Open championship in Oeiras, Portugal.
Throughout the week, the schedule was disrupted by rain; however, the clay-court tournament successfully concluded on Sunday. The final match saw Galfi achieve a comeback victory in 2 hours and 13 minutes.
In a celebratory Instagram post, 26-year-old Galfi expressed, “Third time’s the charm,” marking her most significant professional win.
Galfi`s previous WTA 125 final appearances were at Contrexeville in 2022, where she lost to Sara Errani, and more recently at La Bisbal d`Emporda earlier this month, where she was defeated by Darja Semenistaja. All of her WTA 125 finals have been played on clay courts, and each one has extended to three sets.
In this particular match, Galfi managed to recover after losing the first set and dominated the following two. Impressively, she defended against all four break points she faced in the combined second and third sets.
En route to the title, Galfi only conceded one set, which was the opening set of the final. She has won nine out of her last ten matches, with the Oeiras title coming two weeks after her final appearance at La Bisbal d`Emporda.
Galfi, currently ranked No. 149, is projected to climb closer to the Top 120 in the upcoming rankings update. A former Junior World Champion and Junior US Open champion in 2015, Galfi reached her career-high WTA ranking of No. 79 in 2022.
Also on Sunday, Portuguese sisters Francisca and Matilde Jorge successfully defended their Oeiras Ladies Open doubles title in their home country.
The Jorge siblings had secured their most significant career title at this event last year. As the second seeds this year, they repeated their success by defeating Anastasia Detiuc and Patricia Maria Tig, who were unseeded, 6-1, 6-2 in a 63-minute final.
