Chelsea are close to finalising the signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich Town. The 22-year-old striker is expected to sign a six-year contract with the London club. Delap emerged as a primary target for the Blues this summer following an impressive season with Ipswich.
During his time with Ipswich, Delap scored 12 goals in 37 Premier League appearances as the team was relegated back to the second tier. The former Manchester City forward had a £30 million release clause in his contract which was triggered by their drop.
Sources like The Athletic report that Chelsea have successfully agreed personal terms with Delap. The promising England Under-21 international is set to commit his future to Stamford Bridge until 2031.
He reportedly opted for a move to Chelsea despite interest from other major clubs including Manchester United, Newcastle, and Everton.
Delap is scheduled to undergo his medical examination at Chelsea`s Cobham training facility later today.
The son of Stoke City icon Rory Delap, Liam began his development at Derby County`s academy before moving to Manchester City in 2019. He gained senior experience through loan spells at Stoke, Preston North End, and Hull City before making a permanent switch to Ipswich last summer in a £15 million deal.
His dynamic play, including powerful runs and clinical finishing in the Premier League last season, attracted significant attention. Chelsea were quick to secure his signature, looking to bolster their attacking options and provide competition for players like Nicolas Jackson.
New Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca is already well-acquainted with Delap from their shared time at the Manchester City academy setup, where Maresca coached the youth teams.
Chelsea are hopeful that Delap will be available to join the squad for the upcoming Club World Cup, which is scheduled to commence on June 14.
However, Delap is also reportedly keen on representing England under Lee Carsley in the upcoming Under-21 European Championships in Slovakia.
