Dylan Strome was not even born when Wayne Gretzky surpassed Gordie Howe`s record. In 1994, Gretzky scored his 802nd NHL goal, becoming the all-time leading scorer.

Strome, now a Washington Capitals center, has watched the replay of Gretzky`s historic goal many times.

He remembers McSorley passing to Gretzky, the goal, and the celebration.

Now, Alex Ovechkin is approaching Gretzky`s seemingly unbreakable record of 894 goals. The Capitals are excited to witness this historic chase.

Ovechkin is only six goals away from Gretzky with 12 games left in the season. Despite missing games due to injury, he has scored 36 goals in 55 games this season.

At 39, Ovechkin is on the verge of achieving something extraordinary.

Strome mentioned earlier in the week how incredible it is to think about this moment and what it will be like.

The excitement around the team is growing.

Capitals winger Tom Wilson described it as a “rock star tour”.

Wilson noted that Ovechkin, despite the pressure of chasing the record, remains a great captain and player. He scored his 889th goal in a recent game.

Wilson expressed his pride and said everyone will remember this time. He enjoys being Ovechkin`s teammate and friend during this journey.

Wilson emphasized the immense pressure on Ovechkin, calling it “bigger than the game.” He admires how Ovechkin handles it while continuing to contribute to the team.

Capitals coach Spencer Carbery has been reflecting on the historical significance of Ovechkin`s pursuit. He feels the anticipation in every game.

Jakob Chychrun, who joined the Capitals this season, praised Ovechkin as a beloved and lively presence in the team. He grew up watching Ovechkin and is thrilled to play alongside him.

Ovechkin`s chase for the record has united the team, which currently leads the league.

Wilson said everyone wants to be part of this historic event and will remember Ovechkin`s goals.

Strome imagines teammates dream of assisting on Ovechkin`s record-breaking goal, similar to McSorley`s assist to Gretzky.

Strome concluded that every goal Ovechkin scores now is history, and it`s exciting to be a part of it.

Ovechkin is close to achieving something once considered impossible, and his teammates are cherishing every moment.

Strome added that Ovechkin`s passion for scoring goals is likely why he is approaching this record.

They are happy to be “along for the ride.”
