WASHINGTON — Tom Wilson marked his 31st goal this season, while Alex Ovechkin contributed two assists as the Washington Capitals defeated the Florida Panthers, the reigning Stanley Cup champions. This win marks Washington`s fourth consecutive victory, increasing their lead in the NHL.
The game saw a rapid-fire start, with Wilson assisting Connor McMichael in scoring the opening goal in the first period. Shortly after, Wilson himself scored at the beginning of the second period. Dylan Strome quickly followed up, scoring less than a minute later. Within the first 21 minutes, the teams collectively scored eight goals in a game characterized by offensive action and less emphasis on defense.
Additional goals for the Capitals were scored by Anthony Beauvillier, John Carlson, and Andrew Mangiapane. The Capitals, who were the first team to secure a playoff spot, have demonstrated strong performance recently, winning nine out of their last ten games. Goaltender Logan Thompson made 33 saves, achieving a record of 31-4-5 in his debut season with Washington.
Ovechkin, despite taking five shots, remains at 888 career goals, still seven goals away from surpassing Wayne Gretzky`s all-time record.
For the Panthers, who were playing shorthanded due to injuries and suspensions, goals were scored by Sam Bennett, Seth Jones, and Jonah Gadjovich. The Panthers are currently missing key players such as injured winger Matthew Tkachuk, suspended defenseman Aaron Ekblad, and are awaiting the debut of their trade deadline acquisition, Brad Marchand. Goalie Vitek Vanecek conceded six goals out of 31 shots.
