Vancouver Canucks` forward Kiefer Sherwood achieved a historic milestone in the NHL on Saturday afternoon.
Sherwood has established a new single-season league record for hits, reaching 384 hits in the 2024-25 season.
The record-breaking hit occurred early in the first period of the Canucks` game against the New York Rangers when Sherwood collided with his former teammate, Carson Soucy.
He has surpassed the previous record of 383 hits, which was set last season by Jeremy Lauzon, a defenseman for the Nashville Predators. Sherwood and Lauzon were teammates in Nashville.
Matt Martin, a winger for the New York Islanders, holds the next three highest single-season hit totals: 382 in 2014-15, 374 in 2011-12, and 365 in 2015-16.
Prior to Saturday`s game, Sherwood had already accumulated 383 hits in 65 games, exceeding the next closest players, Luke Schenn and Mathieu Olivier, by a significant margin of 123 hits (they each had 260).
This season, he has also tallied 15 goals and 14 assists.
