By the numbers: Swiatek storms into Stuttgart quarterfinals

Sports News

Iga Swiatek is continuing her winning streak in Stuttgart.

After a bye in the first round, the world No. 2, Swiatek, secured her place in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix quarterfinals by defeating Croatian qualifier Jana Fett with a score of 6-2, 6-2 in the second round.

Swiatek mentioned her happiness in finding rhythm after the match, stating she used the time to adjust to the court and felt great about having another opportunity to play in Stuttgart.

The Polish player has shown remarkable dominance on clay courts this decade, and her Stuttgart record reflects this. In her fourth appearance at the tournament, Swiatek has consistently reached at least the quarterfinals.

Here are some key statistics highlighting Swiatek`s recent victory on clay:

11: Swiatek`s record at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix now stands at 11-1. She previously won the title in both her first and second appearances, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the finals of 2022 and 2023. Her only loss in Stuttgart was against Elena Rybakina in last year`s semifinals, who went on to win the tournament.

18: Following her win against Fett, who is ranked 153rd, Swiatek has now won her last 18 matches against players outside the Top 150.

Her last defeat to a player ranked below No. 150 was over four years ago, against Ana Konjuh, another Croatian player, who was ranked No. 338 when she defeated Swiatek at the 2021 Miami Open. (Alexandra Eala defeated Swiatek in Miami this year, while ranked No. 140.)

0: Swiatek played a dominant first set without allowing Fett any break points. Fett also showed resilience, saving six out of eight break points in the first set, but couldn`t break Swiatek`s serve.

1:16: In the second set, Fett managed to break Swiatek`s serve in the first game, taking a 2-0 lead. However, this was short-lived as Swiatek responded by winning the next six games, concluding the match in 1 hour and 16 minutes.

9: Double faults were detrimental for Fett, as she committed nine throughout the match. One double fault led to losing the first set, and another occurred on Swiatek`s second match point, ending the match.

81: In contrast, Swiatek demonstrated excellent serving, only being broken once and winning 81 percent of her first-serve points.

0-4: Fett`s career record against Top 10 players is now 0-4. However, she previously came close to a Top 10 victory, holding two match points against No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki in the second round of the 2018 Australian Open. Wozniacki recovered to win that match and eventually won her first Grand Slam title at the tournament.

0-5: In the quarterfinals, Swiatek is set to face either No. 7 seed Emma Navarro of the United States or Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia, the 2017 Roland Garros champion.

Swiatek has a 2-0 advantage in her head-to-head record against Navarro. However, Ostapenko presents a tougher challenge, as Swiatek has lost all five of their career matches, including a defeat earlier this year in Doha.
