The Boston Bruins are moving to secure one of their promising young defencemen before he reaches restricted free agency.
The team announced on Monday that they have reached an agreement with blueliner Mason Lohrei on a two-year contract extension worth $6.4 million. This extension carries an average annual value (AAV) of $3.2 million.
Lohrei`s previous two-year entry-level contract was set to expire on July 1st, which would have made him a restricted free agent.
The 24-year-old experienced a season of mixed results during his first full year with the Bruins, appearing in 77 games. He set new career highs with five goals and 28 assists, accumulating 33 points. Lohrei was a significant contributor on the power play, finishing second on the team with 16 power-play points and leading all Bruins defencemen in assists, points, and power-play points.
However, the 6-foot-5 defender also concluded the season with the lowest plus-minus rating in the entire NHL, recorded at -43.
Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Lohrei was selected by the Bruins with the 58th overall pick in the second round of the 2020 NHL Draft, having played his collegiate hockey at Ohio State University.
