J.J. Spaun achieved an unlikely victory at the 2025 U.S. Open Championship, held at a rain-affected Oakmont Country Club on Sunday. This triumph marks the first major win of his professional career.
Spaun`s final round started roughly, with him bogeying five of the initial six holes. However, he staged a remarkable comeback, finishing the remaining holes with three birdies and just one additional bogey. At 34 years old, he becomes the fifth-oldest player in history to win a major championship without a previous top-20 finish in a major.
The competition intensified when Robert MacIntyre completed his round to become the clubhouse leader at 1 over par, resulting in a temporary four-way tie at the top of the leaderboard. Responding to the pressure, Spaun sank a crucial birdie putt on the 17th hole to gain a solitary lead. He then secured his victory with another birdie on the 18th hole. This win is particularly notable as Spaun is only the fifth player in the past 100 years to claim the U.S. Open title after never having made the cut at the tournament before.
The winning shot was a spectacular 64-foot, 5-inch birdie putt on the 72nd hole. Impressively, this was the longest successful putt recorded by any player throughout the entire tournament week.
