NEW YORK — The NHL season changes rapidly, just like Bobby McMann’s impact on the game.
Recently, the Toronto Maple Leafs were struggling, having lost five of their last six games. Mid-March arrived, and they were still seeking their first regulation win of the month. Furthermore, their team identity seemed completely lost.
However, just four days later, the Maple Leafs have secured three consecutive regulation victories against tough opponents, all either Stanley Cup contenders or teams desperately fighting for a playoff spot. Their goalies have been solid, special teams have improved, defense has tightened up, and key forwards have stepped up to decide games.
“Momentum and confidence are crucial in this league,” stated defenseman Jake McCabe after a controlled 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
“A few weeks ago, we lacked both momentum and confidence. That difficult period was necessary to push us to improve, to reflect, and demand more from ourselves. I believe we’ve responded positively to that challenge.”
In wins against Calgary and Colorado earlier in the week, Auston Matthews, a potent power play, and strong goaltending from Joseph Woll were key factors.
On Thursday, the spotlight shifted to coach Craig Berube’s adjusted line of John Tavares, William Nylander, and Bobby McMann, who took on the primary offensive responsibility.
While referees kept penalties to a minimum, Toronto’s second line consistently pressured the Rangers. The McMann–Tavares–Nylander line significantly outplayed their opponents, leading in shots (10-3), scoring chances (12-4), and goals (3-0), according to NaturalStatTrick.com.
“We maintain the belief that we can perform well regardless of the situation,” McMann emphasized. “And when you experience games where things don’t quite go your way, it’s encouraging to have these wins that reinforce that we are on the right track.”
This sentiment extends to the coach as well.
Despite recent home wins, Coach Berube felt the Tavares line needed more speed. This led to the promotion of McMann, who delivered with aggressive forechecking, a goal from a deflection in front of the net, and determined puck battles.
Essentially, McMann embodies the qualities Berube is seeking to instill in his team, mirroring the characteristics of his successful 2019 St. Louis Blues team.
“Bobby demonstrates great skill around the net. We appreciate his speed, which allows him to pressure opponents, create turnovers, and be impactful. He was particularly strong around the puck and in front of the net,” Tavares noted. “He helped us maintain sustained offensive pressure.”
Nylander added, “Yes, our line had a lot of speed. We were effective at regaining possession on the forecheck and spent a significant amount of time in their zone tonight.”
