The TGL playoffs match on Tuesday night featured a showdown between The Bay Golf Club and Atlanta Drive Golf Club.
The Bay GC, seeded second in the postseason, had previously suffered their only defeat of the year against Los Angeles Golf Club on March 3, which cost them the top playoff seed. Atlanta Drive GC, the third seed, had only lost once this season, ironically against The Bay on February 17.
The Bay’s active players were Min Woo Lee, Ludvig Åberg, and Shane Lowry, with Wyndham Clark sitting out. Atlanta was represented by Justin Thomas, Billy Horschel, and Patrick Cantlay, while Lucas Glover was inactive.
Atlanta emerged victorious over The Bay with a score of 9-3. Atlanta will now compete against New York GC in the finals, a best-of-three series scheduled for March 24th and 25th.
Here are some of the top highlights from Tuesday’s exciting TGL playoff match.
Lee’s Powerful 190 mph Drive
Continuing his regular season form, the league leader in both average driver distance and speed, Min Woo Lee, showcased his power. His first drive of the night was a remarkable 328 yards, reaching a peak speed of 190 miles per hour.
Star-Studded Playoff Atmosphere
The second match of the TGL semifinals drew a crowd of notable figures. Among the spectators were former NFL quarterback Michael Vick, former Atlanta Braves third baseman Chipper Jones, golfer Rory McIlroy, and Atlanta Falcons players quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and tight end Kyle Pitts.
Lowry’s Near Bunker Shot Masterpiece
Shane Lowry almost prevented Atlanta from scoring a point on Hole 8 with an impressive 40-foot chip shot from the bunker. The shot seemed perfectly aimed, but the ball just slightly missed the hole to the right.
Thomas’s Lucky Bounce on Hole 10
Justin Thomas benefited from a stroke of luck on his second shot on Hole 10. The ball, initially headed out of bounds, bounced back into play off a restricted area. Rory McIlroy, commentating on the broadcast, described it as ‘the luckiest bounce’ he had ever witnessed.
Cantlay’s Near Hole-in-One Secures Victory
Facing elimination, The Bay used their last ‘hammer’ on Hole 12 to double the hole’s point value. However, Patrick Cantlay responded immediately with an incredible shot that nearly went in for a hole-in-one.
The ball stopped just under four feet from the hole. Atlanta then used their final ‘hammer’ to triple the hole’s value, ensuring a decisive win. Cantlay then sank the putt, securing Atlanta’s place in the finals.
