On one hand, John Tavares has slightly less leverage than a typical star player approaching unrestricted free agency, who usually holds all the cards. However, Tavares hasn`t hidden his intentions, making it clear his preference is to remain a Toronto Maple Leaf for the rest of his career.
It`s fair to say the 34-year-old forward is not, or at least not yet, taking a rigid stance in negotiations with his current club.
From the Maple Leafs` perspective, General Manager Brad Treliving stated he is a “huge John Tavares fan” during his year-end press conference on Thursday. However, he also mentioned that the team`s internal planning wasn`t advanced enough to guarantee new contract offers to either Tavares or Mitch Marner before July 1st.
While Marner`s future with the team is uncertain, it`s difficult to imagine—for several reasons—that Toronto and Tavares won`t engage in serious discussions at some point. If Tavares`s representatives wish to apply subtle pressure during these talks, their strongest point might be that if Tavares isn`t centering the second line next season, finding a comparable replacement would be a significant and potentially challenging task for the Leafs.
Looking beyond Toronto, other Canadian teams like the Montreal Canadiens and Winnipeg Jets also face decisions regarding their center depth this off-season. The Canadiens, focusing on rebuilding, might seek younger options or affordable veterans to fill spots and provide mentorship.
The Winnipeg Jets, depending on their current roster situation and salary cap constraints, could be in the market for a center via trade or free agency to bolster their lineup, potentially replacing outgoing players or adding scoring depth.
The off-season center market will feature various players, from top free agents to trade candidates and depth options. Teams like the Leafs, Canadiens, and Jets will need to carefully evaluate their needs, budget, and the available talent to make strategic moves that will impact their competitiveness in the upcoming season.
