The British & Irish Lions are deep in preparations for their significant series against Australia, a challenge that frequently necessitates strategic adjustments to the playing roster. In a period marked by dynamic squad management, Head Coach Andy Farrell has recently turned his attention to reinforcing the pack, specifically bringing in further talent from Ireland.
Following swiftly on from the call-up of utility back Jamie Osborn, the Lions camp has now welcomed a second Irish player within 48 hours: Leinster prop Tom Clarkson.
At 25 years old, Clarkson represents a developing force in Irish rugby. He has solidified his position in the Leinster front row over the past two seasons, demonstrating consistent form. This domestic performance has translated into international recognition, earning him eight caps for the Irish national team. For those who recall, he even dotted down a try during Ireland`s rather overwhelming 106-8 victory against Portugal – a match where tries seemed to be dispensed with the enthusiasm of a well-stocked sweet shop.
Clarkson’s inclusion provides additional depth and options at prop ahead of the crucial Test matches. His call-up comes as a replacement, stepping in for Asher Opoku-Fordjour. The Sale Sharks prop had previously participated in Lions training sessions but is currently engaged with the England squad during their tour of Argentina.
This recent pair of Irish call-ups underscores the responsiveness required in assembling an elite touring squad. With the addition of Clarkson, the Irish contingent within the British & Irish Lions now totals eighteen players, highlighting the substantial contribution from the Emerald Isle as the squad fine-tunes its preparations for the forthcoming challenge against the Wallabies.
