American Stars Shine at Charleston Open: Pegula Leads the Charge to Round 3

Sports News

On Tuesday, three American players progressed to the Round of 16 at the Credit One Charleston Open. The momentum continued on Wednesday as four more American favorites joined them with impressive victories.

Leading the charge were No. 1 seed Jessica Pegula and No. 4 seed Emma Navarro, who both demonstrated their dominance by conceding only a combined total of 10 games in their opening matches of the clay season.

Pegula, arriving fresh from her runner-up performance at the Miami Open against World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, showcased her form by winning the first eight games en route to a decisive 6-0, 6-3 victory over qualifier Iryna Shymanovich. Meanwhile, Charleston native Navarro delighted the home crowd with a 6-4, 6-3 win against fellow American Hailey Baptiste in one of two all-American clashes of the day.

Joining them in the last 16 are No. 15 seed Ashlyn Krueger and unseeded Sofia Kenin, both securing straight-set wins. Krueger, the reigning Charleston doubles champion alongside Sloane Stephens, overcame Katie Volynets 6-3, 7-6(4) in another all-American encounter on Wednesday. Kenin delivered a commanding performance, dispatching No. 17 seed Belinda Bencic 6-0, 6-3.
