Amazon Prime Video is set to broaden its scope for the second season of its acclaimed hockey docuseries, Faceoff: Inside the NHL.

The streaming platform announced on Thursday that the new season, offering an intimate look into the lives of NHL stars, will feature the return of two key figures from Season 1: Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander and Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk. They will be joined by twelve additional high-profile personalities.

The expanded roster for Season 2`s six episodes includes Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins), Marc-Andre Fleury (Minnesota Wild), Mikko Rantanen (Dallas Stars), Hockey Hall of Famer Brendan Shanahan, Sean Monahan (Columbus Blue Jackets), Thomas Harley (Dallas Stars), Seth Jarvis (Carolina Hurricanes), Wyatt Johnston (Dallas Stars), Anze Kopitar (Los Angeles Kings), Zach Werenski (Columbus Blue Jackets), and Quinton Byfield (Los Angeles Kings). Brady Tkachuk (Ottawa Senators) had already been confirmed as a participant.

“Expect the unexpected,” stated Mark Shopiro, head of Amazon Prime Video Canada. He added, “You saw last year in Season 1 just peeks behind that we had never seen before in the NHL and more access to players than ever before. And what we’re excited about for Season 2 is getting to go even deeper with the players.”

Shopiro indicated the series would include more interviews with teammates, friends, and family members, building on the production quality established by Box To Box with popular sports documentaries like F1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing.

“Heading into Season 2, the players certainly have more of a flavour for it, and I think we also have more of a flavour for what types of stories are resonating best,” Shopiro commented. “We have some pretty monumental moments within hockey as a whole, and then obviously bringing new players into the forefront.”

Amazon`s cameras captured moments behind the scenes during significant events such as February’s 4 Nations Face-Off, recently named the Sports Event of the Year, and during Alex Ovechkin’s pursuit and breaking of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record.

Particular areas of interest within the series are expected to include insights into the typically private life of Sidney Crosby, exploration of Mikko Rantanen’s two trades, a look at Marc-Andre Fleury`s final season, Sean Monahan’s challenging winter, and Brendan Shanahan’s recent tenure in Toronto.

While Shopiro did not disclose specific viewership numbers for Season 1, he emphasized that the renewal reflects strong fan interest and that the partnership with the NHL is a key priority, especially with the success of Prime’s Monday Night Hockey, which performed well with younger audiences and is also set to return.

Regarding the potential for a third season, Shopiro remained cautious, saying, “We’ll see. It’s tough to say. We’ll get through Season 2 and then evaluate what we have. We feel really good about it and see a lot of legs to the series. We want to make sure that as long as we’re making content that’s interesting and exciting to fans and our Prime members, we’ll continue to try and provide that to them.”

Faceoff is executive produced by James Gay-Rees, Paul Martin, and Hillary Olsen for Box To Box, alongside Steve Mayer for NHL Productions and showrunner Daniel Amigone.

The official 2025 release date for Season 2 will be announced at a later time.
