A year after classic final, Sabalenka and Swiatek head Madrid entry list

Sports News

Last year`s Mutua Madrid Open final featured a memorable clash between Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka, with Swiatek winning 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7). This 3-hour, 11-minute match was hailed as one of the best of 2024.

Will we see a repeat in 2025? The world`s top two players are returning to compete in this year`s tournament. Since their Madrid encounter, both Swiatek and Sabalenka have won major titles – Swiatek at Roland Garros and Sabalenka at the US Open. They played each other twice more in 2024, with Swiatek winning in Rome and Sabalenka in Cincinnati. Their head-to-head record stands at 12 matches, and they haven`t played since Cincinnati.

Swiatek and Sabalenka, Madrid champions in 2021 and 2023 respectively, will be joined by former winners Petra Kvitova, a three-time champion, and Ons Jabeur, who won her first WTA 1000 title in Madrid in 2022. The main draw will also include eleven other Grand Slam champions: Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Elena Rybakina, Barbora Krejcikova, Jelena Ostapenko, Victoria Azarenka, Marketa Vondrousova, Emma Raducanu, Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu.

All Top 72 players from the PIF WTA Rankings as of March 17 have entered the Madrid main draw. Additionally, four players are using special rankings to enter: Kvitova, returning from maternity leave; Sorana Cirstea, recovering from foot surgery; Andreescu, whose 2025 season start was delayed due to appendectomy; and Anastasija Sevastova, who has been out since an ACL tear last February after returning from maternity leave.

Jaqueline Cristian, ranked No. 72, is the last direct entry. The first 10 alternates for the main draw are: Katie Volynets, Caroline Garcia, Caroline Dolehide, Eva Lys, Kamilla Rakhimova, Zeynep Sonmez, Emiliana Arango, Maya Joint, Laura Siegemund and Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
